Today's Mix
June 23, 2008
No more imeem links. You guys don't even use them. Instead, I shall
bless you all with a short comment on each song. Download link below.
- Nara Leao - Unkown Track. If you know the title of this,
please let me know. I'll paypal you a dollar or something. Beautiful
track. It's actually the first song that made me fall head over heals
for Nara.
- Nina Simone - Nobody's Fault By Mine. Got this from the "Nina Simon and Piano" album. A charming piano gospel. Amen, Lord.
- Haciendo Punto en Otro Son - Samba Criolla. Back in the
70s there existed a local band that fused every Latin American music
genre imaginable. This track is a fusion between Brazilian Samba and
music from the Puerto Rican cuatro guitar. It's kind of funky
in that Sesame Street (0:52) kinda' way. The Rhodes organ salsa break
at 1:04 makes me proud to be a Boricua.
- Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley - The Old Country. Anything with Cannonball's name on it has to be dope. Wilson's smoke filled nightclub voice is quite brassy indeed. "Just some old man, from some old country".
- Lesiman - Moto Centripeto. Old school hip-hoppers could
have totally killed this break if they were to stumble upon this record
back in the day. Though, I'm sure someone has sampled this by now. That
organ is haunting me again.
- Serge Gainsbourg - Chez Les Yé-Yé. Beach Boy melody meets Wes Montgomery with a twist of some gay French guy. Guitar, bass, and vocals, nada mas.
- Blockhead - Triptych Pt. 1. This sounds like Blockhead's interpretation of a drama movie ending with a sad ending.
- The Pacifics and Illmind - Antidote. This was my "victory
song", blasting from my speakers as I peeled out the parking lot of my
university after kicking the shit out of a finals exam. The fast paced
break and the EQ'd-out guitar has me head bobbin'.
- DJ Phonosycographdisk - Exoskeleton. Me and my high school
buddies used to freestyle over this one. Nothing but an X-files like
sound effect with a drum line being scratched over it.
- Boomboxx - Nemae Prychyn. Who would have thought that
three Ukranian boys could mix a hard-hittin' drum machine line, folk
singing, and an acoustic guitar?
- Pete Rock & CL Smooth - They Reminisce Over You. This
one goes out to Dave. Not only cause he's my Georgia pal from back in
the days, but this track reminds me of when we'd kick it in my father's
basement jamming old school tunes.
- Seyfu Yohannes - Mela Mela. Just imagine some Selassie-era
Ethiopian getting crunk on top of a bar table. A harsh percussive stomp
with a driving bass line.
- Green Future - Honey Rhythm and Butter. Take off them hip-hop training wheels and take your first step into some homegrown soul. Flutes and congas, oh my.
- Pete Rock - Mind Blowin'. Jazzy hip-hop with a pinch of xylophone.
- Blockhead - Forest Crunk. The name says it all. Imagine a Castlevania forest level with Three Six Mafia providing the backdrop percussion.
- Ivan Lins - Samba Sombei. I think Ivan Lins is the singer
of this song. And "Samba Sombei" is just a name I slapped onto it,
cause I was tired of seeing so many "Unknown Song" titles on my 'pod.
An enchanting, continuous samba good for playing in the background
while you drive your woman for a calm night out.
